Diana & Gus Yeadon
I was informed the other day that another great musician and friend of mine: Gus Yeadon; passed away last week on the 7th of April 2010. His daughter Niki Yeadon contacted me. Gus first came to fame in the early 70's when he joined the pop group Love Affair; replacing vocalist Steve Ellis. Gus was also a fantastic Hammond Organ player, and I ranked him very highly on all keys, and it was in this capacity that he came to work with me in my own group circa 1979/1980, and his input to the 5 recordings we made together at Marcus Sound Studios, Bayswater London was incredible. The tracks were produced by the late and great Tony Meehan (original drummer for the Shadows); the tracks were as follows:
Soho Lady
West End Girl
Step Out Of Line
Living on Borrowed Time
High Rise Angry Young Man
High Rise Angry Young Man was particularly classical in the hard Rock/Mod/RB vein, and you can download this track from Itunes and hear for yourself the magic of Gus playing Hammond keys and doing cool back-up vocals.
Gus went on to work with many great musicians, and was highly respected by all. In recent years he became ill with liver complaints while his wife Diana Yeadon took great care of him, and I last spoke with both of them around a year ago, and we talked about Gus coming to do a track or two with me in the studio; sadly this wont happen now, however I do have a great memory of the man and the work we did together. I always regard people that have passed on, as not dying, but moving into another realm, and I am sure Gus is Rockin' with all the greats up there.

This weekend Darryl heard of the death of two close friends:
The Photographer and Artist David S. Alexander passed away on the 21st of December . David photographed Darryl on several occasions from 1973 - till recent, he also did some drawings, and paintings of Darryl.
"David was an incredible nonconformist and a genius painter/photographer. I first met him through his wife around 1972, and we became friends. He photographed me through many stages of my checkered Rock career . David originally worked as a first assistant director at the BBC, and was the 1st assistant on 2000 motels the Frank Zappa film. His landscape paintings were fantastic, and last time I saw him; I suggested he put a long overdue exhibition together - perhaps sometime in the future that will happen - certainly the photos we made together will live on, as he will amongst his friends..."
DR
On Saturday Sandra Tidmarsh contacted Darryl to tell him, that her husband Neil Christian passed away on the 4th of January. As everyone in Rock knows that Neil was one of the original two I's Rockers and was amongst the ranks of Screaming Lord Sutch and other luminaries of the late 50's early 60's Rock 'n' Roll scene and had a big hit with 'Thats Nice'
"Many great musicians worked with him on the road, including Jimmy Page and Richie Blackmore. Neil or Chris; as we liked to call him also managed Crushed Butler in late 1970 to 1971 when CB became Tiger. He put us in Studios and recorded the first version of High School Dropout (Hector/Read), and at that time tried to convince the then dulling business, that we were the greatest thing since sliced bread! I remained great friends with Neil over the years, and we would have a phone call from time-to-time up till recently. I once remember having a great jam with all Neil and all the Rockers in Harrow, and Carlo Little handed his sticks and drum kit to me to play on some real classics with Neil and the boys. Neil's one of those cats you'll always miss!"

Darryl came out from the studio in Berlin on the 6th of August where he recorded with his group: The Sharp Angles (Rob Raw & Ralph Neese) --- with whom he plays drums on occasions. Together they recorded a new instrumental track titled: 'Re-Resurrection' (Up From The Dead) a Raw/Read/ Neese composition. Darryl said he had a lot of fun recording this one live, as he returned to his former instrument the Drums - Crushed Butler style: just as a slap in the face for non-believers. RAY MANZAREK
INTERVIEW: A TRIP
THROUGH BLEEDING PARADISE
by Ralph Heibutzki
Feb 8 2009
Now
that my monthly spoken word gig, "The Expression Session," is up and
running again at the Livery, I thought it timely to revisit the ins 'n'
outs of working in such a genre...which, I'm convinced, doesn't get as
much attention as it should.
In
some ways, that's
understandable:
how many albums of pure dross have been unleashed, because the
leaden-tongued local wordsmith swore up and down that they were
recording...say...the spoken word answer to JOHNNY CASH LIVE AT FOLSOM
PRISON. Or something like that.
But
when the words fall
on
target...and the accompanist is smart enough to respond
correctly...that's a different story, as my friend, Darryl Read,
demonstrated on BLEEDING PARADISE...his second spoken word/music
collaboration with the Doors' former keyboardist, Ray Manzarek.
This
interview with Ray,
conducted
shortly after BLEEDING PARADISE'S release (4/19/07), never hit print
for various boring reasons...not least because of the idiots sporting
clipped cigars in their mouths, as they yawn and shrug, "What else ya
got, kid?" Suffice to say...I have other ideas.
As
Ray notes below,
poetry still
scares people -- which is all the more reason to do it, and add another
notch to the list of happenings, music and projects that occurs without
the Clipped Cigar Crowd's permission. Now read the interview highlights
below...and proceed accordingly!
THE RAY MANZAREK INTERVIEW
CHAIRMAN RALPH (CR): What is the main motivation for wanting to do a
project like this? Even within the confines of what we recognize as the
music business, it doesn't fit very easily, does it?
RAY MANZAREK (RM): No. No poetry does – nobody wants poetry.
CR: You almost get the reaction of “the cross being held to
the
vampire,” when you tell people you're doing stuff like
that...
RM: Yeah, I know, they run away. People are afraid of poetry. Poetry's
OK if it's rap, but we're not rappers (laughs), we're “Beat
Existentialists.” So the motivation was for the sheer art of
poetry and music.
We are continuing the tradition of the Beatniks, putting music and
poetry together into a new synthesis. And the reason to do it was
because Darryl's poetry was very good: I thought, “This is
terrific, man. Let us get together, and I'll play the piano, and you
read your poetry, and we'll have some really good stuff.”
CR:
Now, on [the pair's previous collaboration] FRESHLY DUG, we had a
variety of different keyboard textures. This time around, we just have
the acoustic piano. Was that a conscious decision on your part?
RM: Conscious decision to play acoustic piano, and acoustic piano only.
It's the purity of an acoustic piano, and a voice: nothing added. What
you hear is actually being played back the instant it's recorded, no
overdubs, purity of the two instruments themselves – the
human
voice, and the grand piano.
CR: Exactly. And how does working with Darryl compare to some of the
other folks that you've worked with – since you've had the
privilege of working with quite a few all-time great lyric writers?
RM: Yeah, Jim Carroll, certainly, Jim Morrison, Michael McClure, and
Michael C. Ford, a jazz poet out of Los Angeles, a longtime buddy of
mine from the UCLA days. I played with him, too. Working with Darryl,
he's right there with all the excellent poets; he's a darn good poet,
and he's a very good reader, and he's got a great sense of pacing
– because he knows when to read, and when to stop reading,
which
is an important thing. Let the piano player have some, let the keyboard
player take it for a little bit, set the mood, set the pace. He's a
rock 'n' roller; he's got a great sense of rhythm, and how to pace
within the rhythm.
CR: So where do you think that resistance [to poetry] comes from?
RM: School! It comes from that funny schooling (laughs), it comes from
your classes in school – in which they invariably force you
to
read THE HOUSE OF SEVEN GABLES. You know, once you've had to read that,
you're turned off, man, that's it: “I don't wanna read no
poetry.” But they never assign Beat poetry in school! You
never
get to read Jack Kerouac, you never get to read Allen Ginsberg.
Man, there's a book of poetry that I first got, and Jim Morrison read
it, called THE NEW AMERICAN POETRY: 1945-1960, which was from Grove
Press. That is a great book. I read that book, and just fell in love
with those poets – it's poetry of the streets, hard,
punching,
nasty stuff, and it's got great lines and great meter to it...Jim
Morrison had the same poetry book. I suppose that's one of the things
that we shared, that book of poetry.
CR: It's one of the first things you had in common...
RM: That really brought us together. So, you know, school never teaches
you that kind of poetry: consequently, you think of poetry as
–
(the) Ernie Kovacs character of Percy Dovetonsils! I mean, who wants to
read anything that Percy Dovetonsils wrote?
CR: Sure! Where's the coolness factor there?
RM: Yeah, it's just not hip, man! That's why people turn to rap,
because rap is now – it's the street, “here, now,
today,” punch you in the face, you know.
CR: Right – “the black CNN,” as Chuck D.
once referred to it, I believe.
RM:
There you go. So, what we're doing is the same sort of thing, except it
doesn't come with a backbeat. You supply the drum machine in your head,
and listen to white guys telling you the same stories from a different
angle.
CR: So, from your standpoint, how do you approach something like this
as an accompanist?
RM: Well, first, you read the words, you see what the poem is about.
You think about some beat and chord changes, some rhythm and chord
changes that'll work underneath the poetry, and you lay that down. I
played what I thought would work well with the poem, and he [Darryl]
said, “That's cool with me, man, let's go and do
it.”
CR: It's like jazz, in other words, musical conversation...
RM: That's what it is, jazz improvisation. I'm improvising, totally,
whereas Darryl's got his words, but he knows what he's going to say
– but how he says it is the improvisational part.
CR: Which is certainly 180 degrees from the kind of thing you see in
most rock 'n' roll things today, isn't it? Everybody gets does their
prepared spiel – your 10 hits, delivered in 45, 60 or 90
minutes.
Prepackaged entertainment.
RM: And there's your set! Yeah – I always wonder how people,
especially how musicians, do that. You gotta leave some room for
improvisation. You've got to stretch out. If you don't stretch out, you
don't have the improvisation, you lose the spontaneity of the moment.
I've had people say to myself and [Doors guitarist] Robbie Krieger,
“God, don't you get sick and tired of playing 'Light My
Fire'?” I said, “How can I get sick and tired of
playing
'Light My Fire,' it's got all that improvisational stuff in
it!”
Miles Davis, when he used to play “Milestones”
–
that's a great song, with a huge space for improvisation! So you play,
you state the theme, and then, you do variations on the basic theme.
How could you get tired of it? You never know from one performance to
the next what you're going to play. It's never boring, never tiring.
CR: Just to be the wise guy here, I've had people tell me,
“Well,
what's the point of getting them (musicians) to wander (for) 15 minutes
through the key of Z?” What do you say to something like
that?
RM: Well...Charlie Parker, one of the greatest musicians on planet
Earth, said: “If you don't make a mistake, you're not trying
hard
enough.” So you can listen to the parts that they get wrong
– if you don't like that, go somewhere else (laughs)! I think
there's a Britney Spears concert going on for those people, you know?
She'll be back on the road, you can go see those concerts, and they'll
be perfect every time!
CR: And you can set your watch to them...
RM: Yes, that's correct – and, if you want that, that's fine.
If
you think that way, you probably want to stay the course in Iraq, too

Iris
Wilke is doing a great job in
transating all of my poetry book SET (which also features works on
record with Ray Manzarek);Into German for a new version. Here is the
first one titled aptly: SET
SET
für all jene
die ungeboren
Hope
all you Deutchers' dig into it!

REMEMBER A DAY additional film scenes
On the 13th and 14th of April Nigel Lesmoir – Gordon, Darryl and German actress Barbara Ungerhofen; filmed additional scenes for the film Remember a Day in Cambridge UK; that could not have been filmed at the time of the original production. The filmed additional scenes were written by the late and great Bernard White and Darryl in late 1999. This is a first* in cinematic film history; as no film company has ever returned and resumed filming after 7 years ---- to shoot and re-edit scenes into an existing version. Originally the idea was to shoot the scenes that could not have been filmed at the time (due to the productions low budget); and put them in as extras in a new DVD packaging, however, Nigel Lesmoir-Gordon suggested that the sequences be re-edited into the original film ---- therefore giving it a more plausible theatrical release --- for cinemas. The film boasts a very special cast that stars: Zoot Money, Jenny Fabian, Jamie Foreman, Peter Jenner and Darryl in the leading role of the reclusive Roger Bannerman ---- a character very close to the late and great Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd.

Darryl worked in groups with both these cats, and was at drama school with Des Barres, and in the glam rock group DIZZY with Steve. Darryl has played this number for a long time live, and has had severalrequests to record it.
STEPPING STONE (Bobby Hart/Tommy Boyce) "In the throws of recording a six song session month, I decided to improvise a version of this cool ditty ---- and am pleased with the results of a completely improvised lyric ---- kinda based on someone I knew! The effect is sharp/brazen and edgy as is the same with the other tracks laid!" I performed live in the studio the raw improvised tracks with my current BEAT EXISTENTIALISTS: Robby Linke & Tom Petersen (additional keys and B/U's Kathy X) in Berlin/November 2007 This stuff was produced by Robby Linke & Darryl Executive producer SILKS Keep your eyes on the screen for the upload Maxi single in the next days here and coming quick on vinyl from the new rock album by Darryl (BEAT KAT 2) in 2008l!

Don't you dar miss it!
Good rockin' tonite! Frome me to you, straight to your heart! ..mit Peter Radszuhn http://www.radioeins.de/_/beitrag_jsp/key=beitrag_143.html

Darryl was listening to some Beethoven records at a pad in Berlin, when he got a call at 10pm from Wolfgang of White Trash Fast Food. Apparently a band had been fired on the spot and the club needed a speedy replacement. Darryl jumped into a Taxi with guitars and poetry and made his way to the club --- whilst on route tried at the last minute to get hold of Tom Peterson & Robby Linke; to no avail. Arriving to the club just before 11pm was greeted by Wally & Wolfgang and informed them he would play a solo concert --- and everyone seemed happy as Wolfgang said he'd accompany Darryl on drums for the show. The two played a raging two set show, and was asked by the management to play a further late SET, at 3 am, and Darryl was handsomely paid extra!
On that night there were many English rockers in including some cool Frenchdancing chicks, and the shows got encores on all of them. Darryl got in at around the usual Rock'n' Roll hour of 7 am --- for dawns chorus and a touch more of the 'ol Ludwig Van.
Pics up soon!

Darryl arrived back from NYC into Tegel Airport Berlin at 11:30 am shot back to a pad and rested for two hours; before going to a quick rehearsal. Darryl and his group arrived WTFF at 8pm for a fast sound check, and then played another Thursday Koncert at White Trash Fast Food Club Berlin --- the line-up on that night was --- Tom Peterson on drums & Robby Linke on bass guitar. The group played two smashing SETS of pure and real Rock 'n' Roll sprinkled with poetry and deep lyric, and original compositions from Darryl.

Kathy Freeman

Kathy Freeman came up to me at a recent Beat Existentialist Koncert in Berlin; and gave me a copy of a cover she recorded of Crushed Butlers' "It's My Life" - I liked this version of the Hector/Read/Breslau composition - which you can now hear at: www.myspace.com/crushedbutleruk
Kathy is a young British musician living in Berlin, and has certainly captured the raw essence of CB's early 1969 recording - even down to my drum riff - watch out for this chick - she's going places.

Get down to The Prince Of Trash - next show in Berlin: Darryl will be with his Beat Existentialists' (Tom Peterson/Lord Alvis) at The White Trash club (www.whitetrashfastfood.com) on Friday 8h of June 2007 - for Bleeding Paradise poetry, and a full hard core Rock set - up all night - kick ass and take names Koncert!
New video promo for Bleeding Paradise: titled Sam Cha Cha up on: (click here): Youtube -- the film features Ben Becker, Svenja and Darryl (you can also check it here on the main page).
'No Place' promo film shot and cut to Darryl's composition in 1986 - is also up on Youtube. This is the first time that this 16mm B/W, is getting a re-dug premier. Some have already commented that the work was 20 years ahead of its time - that would figure as Tarantino hadn't made True Romance at that time.
So another one - to far ahead any going further - just like: Crushed Butler!

The legendary rock 'n' roll keyboard player/singer - Roy Young, and Darryl played two sets at the La Cueva jazz club in Alicante, on the 8th of November 2006. The jam went so well the two of them are talking about some concert dates together - initially in Europe.
Darryl said: "Roy Young is root rock 'n' roll, and when we played together - the whole place was jumping! Roy and I were laughing as we ploughed straight into a heavyweight version of Great Balls Of Fire - as it seemed like we'd been working together for years - and you know when your laughing and ripping it up! Top Berlin photographer: Marion Schult made a photographic shoot with Darryl in Berlin on the 11th and 12th of August. The sessions went on till 5:30 am, with a long break in-between for dinner, an Art gallery opening and a visit to the opening night of the Friedrichspalast Theatre Berlin.
The last session Darryl made with Marion was in early 1986: where they shot rolls in Hamburg and Berlin - all of which were classically and decadently ahead of the time. Darryl said: "It was cool to see my old friend and work some Photomic magic again."

Bad and sad news! I heard yesterday that Syd Barrett - the innovator of psychedelic music and founder member of Pink Floyd: has passed away at 60 years-old.
I was privileged to have met him once in the mid 90's; and, a few years later was asked by the main Syd Barrett aficionado: the late and great Bernard White - to portray a similar type of character in the film Remember A Day. Over a long period of time Bernard filled me in on Syd's (Roger's) incredible Artistry as well as his uncompromising life style. Recluse and omnipotent smart genius - he cut out all those middle-men right to the end.
Live forever you crazy diamond.

Darryl read his poetry and jammed with The Void (a cool young psychedelic group) on the 16th of April 2006, at the Doors Of Perception concert in Illingen/SAARLAND Germany; and later jammed again with The Doors Experience: a full version of GLORIA (more pics up soon). Darryl also did a radio interview with Swedish DJ Jimmy B - for Swedish Radio. Sabine Hastrich the Fest promoter; did a great job in all the proceedings, and made sure everyone was properly taken care of; even down to making sure Darryl got taken to Frankfurt in the early hours of the morning - so that he could visit his friend Ray Manzarek playing in concert that night. Sabine will be working on other promotions and in a managerial capacity for Darryl in Germany.
Having successfully arrived at The Post House hotel early in the morn (6:AM) - Darryl grabbed a few hours sleep; then made his way down to the Jahrhunderthalle Frankfurt, Germany. First cat he sees is Ian Astbury - who quickly got Darryl fixed up with VIP passes etc; as Ray was still on stage. Darryl hung with Ray and Robby for dinner with the whole Riders On The Storm Crew. Riders went on stage around 8:30 and, as usual, played a giant show. After the show Darryl hung with Ray; as Darryl (forever the Rock n' Roll Gypsy) Checked out the possibilities of getting a ride to Paris on the ROTS tour bus - so he could see the show and go back to Alicante, Spain, from Paris. Ray fixed it! And half an hour later Darryl boarded the bus at 12:30 am for Paris with Ian Astbury and Phil Cheng (who Darryl has become good friends with - since the Portugal tour shows of ROTS in 2002). The trip was a cool ten hours under the kind hospitality and supervision of Rick Manzarek (Rick and the Ravens) - Ray's brother.
Darryl said "The Paris Olympia concert was dynamite as ROTS went full throttle into a blazing set - ending on the third encore with Light My Fire." Outside the Olympia before the show, Darryl ran into his friend and big DOORS fan: Imelda - who later got photographed with Darryl and Ray at the after show party.
Darryl spent the next day in Paris and bought a cool fountain pen covered in silver dragons - from a very old French shop (that was a story in itself - more later in Beat diary) before returning home and back to film Biz.

I was informed by my friend Paulina Matsoukas yesterday morning that Nikki Sudden: a good friend of mine - passed away in NYC on Saturday the 26th of March. I hung out a lot with Nikki in Berlin over the last few years, and we played the same venues. I also had the pleasure of gigging with him, and we kept in touch over the phone from time-to-time. Only four weeks ago he asked me for a copy of Crushed Butler, and he sent me a copy of his Treasure Island album in return. On many occasions I would go round to his place in Berlin, and sit and talk, he would always make breakfast or brew some English tea, and if ever I needed a contact for R 'n' Roll stuff, like promoters or whatever - he would have one - instantly!
I couldn't believe that he had gone at first, and made several phone calls etc. Now, on finding all to be true - I am deeply saddened, as he was one friend I could always phone up - and he'd know what was going on - everywhere. I never heard of Nikki staying at home for one night - he seemed to be gigging permanently. I admired his true Rock 'n' Roll spirit immensely, and I frequently asked him how he managed it. Nikki always talked fast - like trying to cram everything into a short space of time - this he succeeded in doing - there must be hundreds of his recordings out there somewhere, and I know a lot of people who love his work - so he will live on!
I would imagine that he was composing a new album on his way up there.
Miss ya
Darryl

Got word this morning that my old friend and confident Bronco John, died some time ago. I had not seen Bronco for a year, and that was on one of my trips back into Hampstead: where Bronco was somewhat of a legend. I 'd know him since the mid-seventies, where he and another friend of mine called Steven Davey would hang out late nights in Hampstead or at Tricky Dicks all-night cafe on the Finchley Road. Over the years and up until recently I would always (at Broncos request) go for a tea with him at the Hampstead Community Centre, and catch up on the cafe/ street scene of the area. He knew everyone and everything going on in the area, and in the days when Peter Cook was alive; Bronco would be invited into his place for a supper or two. He was very well liked by the residents of the area, and they treated him as a resident too; although Bronco was a man of the road. He hated to be known as a tramp, and was a bright individual, who frequented William Hills Betting Shop in the high street regularly - picking out many a winning horse (if he won he'd always treat me to a tea and roll-up cigarette). Bronco John (as he liked to be known as), was the type of man that I expected to be always around - so when I got the news today - I was very saddened, as the last time we spoke in the street he asked me to go for our usual cup of tea (the badge he is wearing in the picture below reads The Minister Of Tea - which he was known as amongst friends), and I was unable to do so. I guess that tea-meet will have to wait for a awhile now.

Just got back from Paris, when bad news was relayed to me via my friend Penny Norris; that a very good friend of hers and mine: Ed Sealy was killed in a road accident on June the 28th. Ed was a great guy and a loyal friend; who came to many of my concerts, and supported and encouraged my Rock career for many years. He was an ultimate Rock 'n' Roller and a collector of cool Artists work. I remember on one occasion; where myself and Clive Zone had finished a concert at the 100 club, and asked for the money for my CD sales from a manager I had at that time; who refused to give me the money from the sales. We were left high and dry with empty pockets to get back home: Ed pulled out some cash for Taxis. He was a very generous man who never had a bad word for anybody - in fact he helped everybody he knew, and even some he didn't.
I will miss him greatly, but I know he is digging into all the best gigs up there - with all the good ones.

A great friend of mine Dave Goodman - the innovative Rock producer who first produced The Sex Pistols; died last night of a massive heart attack. The news reached me earlier today via my Rock UK manager/publicist: Phil Strongman who was a very close friend of Dave's. I first met Dave at George Rainbows place; some months after we were about to start shooting Remember a Day, I was looking for locations and one was The Fans tiny basement studio: Dave Goodman had the perfect utility under his house in SE London. We began filming for one week there; also using Dave's and Kathy Manuell's (his wife) living quarters to do other scenes in. From day one of the shoot Dave and Kathy were a great asset to have on our low-budget feature; they provided the location meals and generally helped out in all aspects of the production; later into the shoot, I cast both of them as The Mime Troupe Players who were featured in the piece. During editing, I needed incidental music and Dave and I composed the score and recorded it in two afternoons. A couple of years later in 2002, I asked Dave to collaborate with me on a CD album and lived the work with him and Kathy at their home and studio for 10 Days solid, composing, as we recorded our album 'Shaved', Dave co wrote three of the tracks with me. He was the best producer I ever worked with, tough, demanding and innovative: but ultimately stretched me to where I had to be at in the recordings. We both played all the instruments on the work, and as previous with RAD, enjoyed a special and magical creative chemistry. Dave was a driving force and inspiration to many a punk musician, and I hope that now the British music press will give him the long-overdue homage he deserved whilst he was alive.
On Thursday evening (last night) I was talking to Phil Strongman, and we discussed recording a new CD album with Dave at his new studio in Malta; which had been on the cards for a long time. RIP my friend and I know you'll be working with all the big ones, up there in the best studio of all worlds.

Judy Sacco & Darryl in Greenwich Village NYC Jan 2005. Judy is a big DOORS fan as well as being heavily into Darryl's works - they met during a DOORS Fest in LA 2002 (which Darryl was appearing at) alongside with her friend; a cat called Dave Dutkowski (who now runs Ray Manzarek's web site).
Darryl said: "The NYC trip was exhilarating and packed with all those poetical ghosts; that seem to hang out with me in all the right places!"
Mark Commesso (Judy's friend) got us all around in his large truck as well as taking some cool pics, and Darryl was able to throw down some low-key gigs.

The book launch went well at the 12 Bar Club in London and quite a few Coronites turned up: some who were featured in chapters of Stardom Road, as well as the fab - Jenny Fabian. Zoot Money rolled in and accompanied on keys; Darryl, Charlie Harty (Darryl's bass player from the mid 70's) , and a cool chap called Malcom on slide guitar. The set went into a good hour and the elite scene raged!

I have spoken with Bernard's sister, Anne, last night, who informed me that Bernard's brother will also attend the cremation on the 23rd of April, and she was very pleasant. I have asked Claire Gordon to read a short poem I have written for Bernard, and to recite it in my absence at the cremation. I have put the works up on the poetry section of my site, so that his friends may read it. Zoot Money and myself will consider holding a get together for Bernard in the near future, and as Jenny Fabian put it: "For the likes of us!"

Bernard White
News reached us last night that Bernard White will be cremated on Friday morning the 23rd of April 2004. The funeral will be held at Golders Green Crematorium, East Chapel , at 11:15
No one has been officially invited by Zang (his widow), and no-one was informed of any kind of service for Bernard; we were told that Bernard's sister Anne, had told Zang that she couldn't stop his friend's from attending, and this was the message I received from Claire Gordon last night, who passed on the information to Bentley Browning and myself about the funeral details. I have contacted Zoot Money who cannot come at short notice as he is flying that morning into Europe for a concert, I also have commitments in Germany (where I am currently), but I am trying to make last minute arrangements for a flight in for the funeral. I have received many e mails and calls from Syd Barrett/Floyd fans and web sites, who have all sent out their condolences, and I am sure their are many other friends of Bernard who would like to pay their respects at this late date.

Saturday 17th April 2004
My close friend and partner in the film and rock biz... Bernard White, died on Wednesday the 14th of April in unfortunate circumstances. Bernard had been having problems with his recent marriage, which was less than 6 months old. I was informed of this bad news late night on Thursday the 16th, whilst in Spain.
I flew back to Germany on Friday the following day, and have since been dealing with e mails and phone calls concerning Bernard. Claire Gordon and Bernard's next door neighbour Bentley Browning and myself have been doing our best, to gather more information and try to get the funeral arrangements clarified. I will make a further update as soon as these details have been made known to us.
Bernard was a great friend who had formed White Label Records in 1994 for the sole purpose to promote a song I composed called 'Hard on Love' which he thought of as a classic rock song, subsequently he paid for the recording of the song and three others which were featured on my TEENAGE DREAM CD, and promoted the disc which also featured Bill Legend. I was at a particularly low ebb in my career at this time and Bernard helped and encouraged further recordings and myself as an Artist. In 1999 he came up with an original story about a fan stalking a reclusive rock star which was loosely based on the legendary Syd Barrett, and, as everyone knows Bernard was the top aficionado on Syd, and had started the Terrapin fanzines for him in the early Seventies. Together in '99 we both wrote a loose screenplay based on his original story, as by this time Bernard had secured some finance for the film, and by late in that year we were filming 'REMEMBER A DAY'. Rick Wright of the Pink Floyd gave Bernard the writes of RAD to be used as sound track for the piece, which was initially going to be a twenty minute short, however as filming progressed the production became a full feature.
Berni was always there for me at the end of a phone line and was very supportive in all aspects of my career, and together we fought against all odds to make RAD an underground success. Myself being part of the cast and producer of RAD (the film), have decided that the work should be dedicated in memory to Bernard as he was very much a part of it's instigation. I have lost a very good friend and creative cohort and I am disturbed by the circumstances in which he passed away, and will miss our long telephone conversations in which he was one of the few people I could confide in.
Bernard White amongst the record dealers fraternity was very well respected as 'The Man' as he was one of the first and most knowledgeable. He was also a sensitive chap with a big heart.
Rest in peace my friend
from your good friend

Darryl returned to Portugal for a concert and television show. The concert was at the Escola Superior de Educação de Portalegre on the 3rd of March where he played for 600 students of the college, the audience rocked! and apart from singing and playing the guitar, Darryl also played a drum solo on request from the raging students. Pics up soon. On the 4th he gave a presentation of 'Stardom Road' along with Rui Silva at the college, who presented his book on Jim Morrison and The Doors 'You Make Me Real'. Darryl is negotiating a return visit to Portugal in May. It seems that they've taken strongly to him over there. Many thanks to Rui Silva who put the whole thing together.
Monday the 10th of February 2004
'Stardom Road' Darryl's autobiography has just been released in Berlin Germany; it is book one of two: the second works titled 'The Angel of Dust' is currently being written. The foreword has been written by the rock journalist Ralph Heibutzki (latest work The Life & Times of Danny Gatton biography), and the book back cover description notes have been penned by Jenny Fabian (author of Groupie and A Chemical Romance). Darryl will be making a series of readings and signings over the next 4 months, combined with concerts to promote the new works. Watch News and Main page for up-and-coming events.

Darryl did a book signing with Rui Silva at FNAC in Portugal for his new book You Make Me Real, the store rocked when Darryl was requested to play Roadhouse Blues. Darryl was then invited by Ray Manzarek on the 6th and 7th to 2 shows of Doors 21st century. Darryl: "There were 8 thousand people there each night, and Ray, Robbie and Ian were blowing the auditorium apart and I had a real good time."

La Vega will play a special concert for Jochen Maassen in Moenchengladbach on the 20th of December 2003, for his wedding. Jochen has contributed a lot of energy and coordination to Darryl's recent book works, the night promises to be a wild one... to say the least.

Monday the 5th of May 2003
Darryl and his group La Vega, were honoured that Darryl's friend German Film star Ben Becker, joined the band on stage for three improvised songs, at the Ex und Pop date on the 26th of April. The show was pretty raw, resulting in three microphone stands being smashed up, and amazing silent screen stunts performed in front of the stage from a ladder by Herr Becker. As usual the whole event was filmed by Qreuzberg's main underground filmster Sebastian Marge, who also premiered his film of Darryl's B/W promo 'The Kreuzberg Hustle' (clips up on site soon!) accompanied with a short and amusing 'making - of' the promo piece, which Sebastian had just finshed and edited for the showing. Ben and Darryl continued to Rock the Ex und Pop and party with Lord Alvis and Tom Petersen, till the early hours of the following morn.
Darryl quotes: "Ben is a special star, and one of my favourite German actors, he is like Klaus Kinski, Brian Jones and Rainer Werner Fassbinder all in one! Ultimately he is in his own right - a true Artist, which you don't get much of these days."

Monday the 24th of March 2003
Darryl Read's La Vega will play a special concert at the 'Ex und Pop' club Berlin, on Saturday the 26th of April 2003. The evening will feature some poetry readings and promo films. The group will be on stage at approx 10.30pm. They will also do a signing after the concert.
Friday the 14th of February 2003
Darryl just got back from Berlin, where he has been shooting for three days, a raw, funky, punky video promo featuring 'The Qreuzberg Hustle' ditty from 'Shaved'. The film was shot by main punk Sebastian Marg, who is certainly gaining a cool rep for his hip scene stuff in the area of 36. The piece features heavyweight underground faces around Kreuzberg. They will be shooting more additional scenes in a week or so, Sebastian is already editing the tapestry. The work is a kinda forerunner to the 'King of the Johnnies' movie script, that Darryl has had under his arm since Terry Stamp wrote it for him in 1984.
Mickey Finn 16th of January 2003
I
was sad to be informed by my friend Clive Zone a few days
ago that Mickey Finn has passed away.
I worked some gigs and
recording with Mickey, and glad to say the performances were filmed,
they will always be in my heart as a great memory of the Man.
Mickey was always full of cool tips and advice, and a great Rock
'n' Roll soldier to have in your team.
At
the time of working with the great Bill Legend, which spread over two
years and many recordings.
On
occasions, Mickey would join us.
It was great to watch the two of
them work some of my original material live at the 100 Club, with the
legendary Zoot Money on keys.
This
was, I think, a cool way for both Bill and Mickey to
go...
new original rock! and do our own thing!
the
two of them needing to get their teeth into something tangible, and
unique.
On the magical times I spent with Mickey, he was always a great professional, always on time and together. I admired his warlock spirit of survival, to keep on rocking. He most certainly lifted my soul at times.
One day in the studio he said how much he liked an acoustic ballad I wrote Titled, 'I'm Thinking of you'. Which is what I am doing now Mickey.
Fly high and soar with freedom.
From your old friend,
Darryl

The group which features Tom Pettersen (drums) and Lord Alvis on bass guitar, will perform at 11:30 pm.
This
marks a full circle in Darryl's rock career, as Ex und Pop was the
club he was discovered at in 1985,

Demitri Leningrad (now a big club owner) who at that time enhanced
Darryl's
rock
status on the Berlin Underground scene.
Dimitri's
first booking for Darryl was at The KOB

is
where the new Ex und Pop is located now.
Tom
Pettersen also gigged around with Darryl in those fiery punky gothic
days of winter 85,

Alvis has worked with a variety
of
German underground groups over the last ten years, and wields an mean
Fender precision.
