I'm saying a big thanks to: Wally, Wolfgang & Trinity and all the gang at White Trash Fast Food Club Berlin, Germany ----- for making 2007 a great year for me and my Beat Existentialists' at the club, the shows have been great to do there; ( as was the last one on the 29^th of December) and the group and I look forward to the new concerts there on every last Saturday of every month in 2008 ---- for full Poet Rock 'n' Roll!

Wishing all my friends here and on myspace a great and successful ----- full-lived 2008!

Darryl and his Beat Existentialists' ripping up the WHITE TRASH FAST FOOD CLUB BERLIN on 8^th of November 2007. The four encore show was filmed by Alex Avantgarde: so you can see for yourself; when the new documentary of Darryl's works and collaborations are all put together in a fully documented DVD of Archives up to present day --- out in 2008. Watch this space for more concerts at Berlins CBGB'S: WTFF, and some new recordings are on their way to you --- make 2008 a Maxim Poet 'n' Roll year!

Darryl visited Ray & Robby at their Riders On The Storm concert at Le Grand Rex in Paris. Darryl said: "The concert was fucking great! And I think it was the best I ever saw Ray and Robby play - the keys sounded like thunder with new epic chops; and Robby's impromptu version of 'Spanish Caravan' was the best I'd ever seen him play -- ROTS blew the stage apart that night!" Ray and Darryl found time to toast their poetry album BLEEDING PARADISE (due for its USA release), with photographer Marion Schult backstage after the concert.

Darryl also checked in to see his poetry reading friends Alex and the Scorpywag gang at 'La Renaissance' amongst loads of other DOORS fans:  check news for more pics.

Ray Manzarek: Life After Jim Morrison - Part I

For Ray Manzarek, the Beat goes on.

In fact, the Beat has never stopped. Even after Jim Morrison’s shocking death in 1971 and the Doors’ subsequent break-up two years later, the group’s legendary keyboardist has never faded from the rock & roll scene. Whether it’s producing post-punk pioneers such as X and Echo & the Bunnymen or resurrecting the Doors with a new frontman, Manzarek continues to mesmerize and move new generations of listeners with his atmospheric, jazz-inflected playing.

One of the most intriguing projects that Manzarek has involved himself with lately is a collaboration with late ’60s garage rock survivor Darryl Read, frontman for Britain’s first punk band Crushed Butler. Combining Read’s existentialist Beat poetry with Manzarek’s cinematic keyboards, the two create fevered art on Bleeding Paradise, their third team-up.

In an interview conducted on March 14, Manzarek explained his long fascination with the Beat Generation and how it led to the formation of the Doors and his creative partnership with Read.

Manzarek has known Read for 20 years. According to Manzarek, what attracted him to Read’s poetry was that “it’s got a street credibility, an instant punch in the nose,” he said. “It’s now, it’s today, and yet it’s got its roots firmly set in the Beat Generation.”

It was the work of the Beat Generation, the groundbreaking, spontaneous, and in-your-face words of underground icons such as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, that opened the Doors for Manzarek. Manzarek revealed that the writing of the Beats was “the reason the Doors came together in the first place, an attempt to wed poetry and rock & roll, the same way that the Beats had wed poetry and jazz.”

In some ways, Manzarek’s work with Read unites both approaches as Read’s delivery booms with punk intensity while Manzarek’s lushly crafted keyboards have the playful energy of jazz.

Darryl's collaboration with Spanish underground house group - The Doctors: gets a vinyl release under a new genre of Poet House, featuring 3 mixes of Darryl's poem 'Maybe It's Good If You Look At It Twice' (Lyrics) performed vocally by Darryl with music written and performed by The Doctors.

Darryl said: "I am experimenting in all avenues and new outlets for poetry, to get it heard! The Doctors have done a cool job on this one, and the middle music-break of the track is a groove - sounding like: Pete Townshend was let loose in the House Studio on amphetamines, and is about to break up a Rickenbacker whilst feeding-back distorted guitar riffs!"

A first* in Darryl's career - two records released on the same day by two separate labels: 'Uncrushed' Crushed Butler (record of the month - review) - the long awaited - first punks 1969 record (sold out on vinyl) gets a UK CD release from RPM Records/Cherry Red. Freshly Dug gets a UK release with again brand new packaging, on Lemon Records/Cherry Red: who also have two other works of Ray's.

September is also Darryl's birth month. Darryl said: "I am glad these two items are getting around, and I hope someone sends one to the Record Collector; because if we get another severe slagging critically from them; like we did when Freshly Dug and Remember A Day (the film) first came out - then these two new re-issues are bound to be a success all over again!" Crushed Butler reviews.  Freshly Dug reviews.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Darryl, recently collaborated and recorded with Spanish House group - The Doctors, on a new track 'Maybe It's Good If You Look At It Twice' which features  Darryl's poetry of the same title. The 12inch vinyl platter will be released later this year on Deep Bass Records, in a new genre called 'Poet House'.

Darryl said: "The whole thing happened after jamming for kicks one night in Spain with The Doctors; an improvised poem live at their gig  - the next day, I saw Jorge Pruess who runs Deep Bass Records, and he asked me if I would be interested in recording a track as Darryl Read with The Doctors. I told Jorge that I would - as any outlet for poetry is a good one!"

My friend and cohort in the Art's of book printing: Jochen Maassen has a new book out; featuring a DOORS diary (his own), from a fans point of view. Darryl's long awaited autobiography 'Stardom Road' is out as from this day (10th of February), on the underground scene in Germany & England. This is a special hardcover, laminated 1st edition of 500, hand bound printed in Germany by 7GmbH Digitale Druckvorstufe. The first orders through Darryl's site will be signed to the purchasers by the author. Darryl will be promoting the book internationally, and his first warm-up  launch releasing the works will be a the Zentral club Berlin on the 26th of February 2004, where he will be in concert with the Berlin band The Hollow Men, and of course Alvis and Tom (La Vega). Darryl made a special appearance at FNAC Portugal, to help promote Rui Silva's book 'You Make Me Real' which he wrote 3 pages for on the Doors and their influence. He was requested to sing a Doors song and played Roadhouse Blues then rocked the bookstore. On the 6th and 7th of December Darryl was invited by his friend and cohort in poetry Ray Manzarek, to watch two shows of  Doors 21st Century at the  Pav. Atlantico.
